Before you book

Is there a benefit to booking direct?

Yes. You deal with us, the people who look after the house, from your first question to the day you leave.

What is parking like?

There are 2 free parking spaces on our driveway. It is steep with a narrow turn, so we recommend experienced drivers for larger vehicles. Free on-street and public parking is nearby.

What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 5pm and check-out is by 10am. You let yourself in with a smart lock, and we send clear directions and instructions before you arrive.

Can we bring our dog?

Sorry, pets are not allowed in the house. It is also non-smoking, and we do not accept parties or events. Thank you for understanding.

The house

Is the house suitable for children?

Yes. There is a cot, a travel cot on request, a high chair, children's tableware and fireplace guards, and the back garden is fully fenced. Please bring your own cot bedding. We can recommend babysitters.

How many bedrooms and bathrooms are there?

Four bedrooms, all en-suite: two kings and a double on the first floor, and a king in the loft. With the downstairs powder room, that makes 4.5 bathrooms. The house sleeps eight.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Yes. It runs at about 33 Mbps, fast enough for streaming and video calls, and there is a dedicated workspace in a room with a door, if you need to work during your stay.

Is the house accessible?

Sorry, the house is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. There are stairs between all three floors, and the drive is steep with a narrow turn.

Is there a tumble dryer?

No. The utility room has a washing machine, a drying rack and heated rails, which work well for drying walking kit and towels between days out.

Is the house good for two families?

Yes. Four bedrooms, each with its own en-suite, give every couple or family their own space. The kitchen, the long dining table and the living room bring everyone together at the end of the day.

Can we walk to restaurants and the harbour?

Yes. The house is in central Portree, on Staffin Road. The harbour, shops, pubs and restaurants are a short walk, so you can leave the car at home in the evenings.

How old is the house?

It was built in 1889. We kept its character, from the wooden floors and staircases to the bay windows and the fireplace, and added modern comfort throughout.

How do we check in?

You let yourself in with a smart lock from 5pm on the day you arrive. We send directions, parking notes and instructions before your stay, and we are a message away throughout.

Portree and Skye

Is Portree a good base for exploring Skye?

Yes. Portree is the island's main town, with shops, restaurants and the harbour. The Old Man of Storr is about 12 minutes by car, and most of Skye's best-known walks are within an hour.

Do we need a car on Skye?

We recommend one. Portree is easy on foot, but most of Skye's walks and viewpoints are far apart and best reached by car. There are 2 free driveway parking spaces at the house.

Can you see the Northern Lights from Portree?

Sometimes, on clear, dark nights between autumn and spring when the aurora is active. Drive a few minutes out of town, away from street lights, with a clear view north. Check AuroraWatch UK first.

Where is the best place to stay on the Isle of Skye?

Portree, for most visitors. It is the island's main town, with the harbour, shops and restaurants, and it sits in the middle of Skye. The Old Man of Storr is about 12 minutes away by car, and most of the best-known sights are within about an hour.

Is there a vacation rental on Skye big enough for two families?

Yes. The Oberoi House sleeps eight in four bedrooms, and every bedroom has its own en-suite, so two families or four couples never have to share a bathroom.
